Jan de Haan is a contemporary Dutch [1] composer [2], publisher [3], conductor [4] and musician [5]. He studied trombone at the Muziek-Pedagogische Akademie in Leeuwarden [6] between 1969 and 1973. In 1974 he started to study brass band direction under Henk van Lijnschooten [7] at the conservatory in Utrecht [8] and earned his diploma in 1976. After that he started working as a freelance musician, conductor and composer. He was also a producer for both television and radio and was responsible for numerous programs. Since 1983 he has been a lecturer at the Muziek-Pedagogische Akademie in Leeuwarden [9] and owner of a music publishing company. He is the brother of composer Jacob de Haan [10]A Discovery Fantasy was composed in 1993 for Hernanda, De Haan’s daughter and describes in five tempos (Introduction / Bolero / Rondeau / Intermezzo and Finale) the “discovery” of the world
